In this podcast, we consider oppression relating to race and ethnicity, the importance of anti-racism in social work, and how social workers can enhance their role in challenging racism.
Social workers can challenge discrimination and uphold people’s rights. Anti racism is helpful in social work because it is a social workers job to advocate for all people. They discuss “white privilege” and the fact that it means not facing discrimination based on race color or nationality.
We as social workers must help all people and recognize that racism may play a role in someone’s struggles in life.
This lecture really made me think about how race and ethnicity impact families and communities in everyday ways. Laff and Ruiz (2019) point out that oppression and systemic racism shape access to resources and opportunities, and that’s something I see often in real life. For me, anti-racist social work means being honest about these barriers, not ignoring them, and using my role to speak up and challenge systems while still supporting people where they are (Laff & Ruiz, 2019).
Good evening, as I listen to this podcast, I feel that racism will never end. We can work toward social justice and fight for the rights of humanity. If we could look at each other as human beings and not by race, this would be a better world. As a social worker, the fight must go on.
