In this podcast, we are joined by guests Fareena Shaheed and Ann Shaheed to discuss the essential topic of Black Lives Matter. We have a difficult conversation about anti-racism in social work, why we are so slow to change and what we can do to be anti-racist.
I appreciated the time the speakers took to engage with one another in conversation about racism. However, my thoughts kept coming back around to what concrete actions need to come out of these national and global conversations, especially when we think about the structures in place where periodic national conversations about racism and the anti-racist work that needs to be done, is just that, periodic and often just a ‘feel good’ measure to mollify the ‘masses’. So my suggested action is a topic that has been repeatedly put forth by black people and people of colour for centuries, and that is reparations. It is my view that if white privilege and the structures that prop it up is to be dismantled, then stolen lands need to be returned.
Very helpful. Am writing about black lives matter and disability for my year 1 assignment.
