In this podcast, we consider how social workers promote equality and challenge discrimination relating to sexual orientation. We consider the importance of sexual identity, and look at how we can actively support people to be able to access and live out their rights.
This episode discussed the history of discrimination in the LGBTQ+ community and how to avoid discrimination and othering of those a part of this group. This episode used a lot of different references and resources to display the long history of oppression this group has faced. I liked how the podcast referenced different views from around the world and connected them to today’s work. The content discussed was brief enough to get an insight as to larger issues within this community while also helping its listeners to gain a deeper understanding of how to approach these issues in social work settings. The delivery approach was warm-hearted and open-minded giving acknowledgement to their own biases and the need for cultural humility when discussing these topics. They do not claim to be experts on the subject but rather to pay more attention to the growth and movement over each period of an individual’s life. They discuss the importance of not being complacent and to be pushed out of their comfort zone. They reiterate the fact that it is okay to no know or to be uncomfortable due to a lack of knowledge, but stress how that can be an opportunity to keep developing and learning. They state that acceptance is not enough and we must understand what in a person’s identity matters most to them and how we can help to action what matters. The podcast was very easy to digest and kept me engaged throughout.
